Seoul Boutique Stay Guide
Everything you need to know about staying in Seoul
Seoul holds the largest share of boutique hanok stays in Korea. Three neighborhoods — Bukchon, Seochon, Ikseon-dong — each offer a distinct density and pace. Most properties sleep 2–4 guests. Peak-season booking lead time is 3–4 weeks.
Neighborhoods
Bukchon
Bukchon sits between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces. Density of traditional hanoks is the highest in Korea. Daytime foot traffic is heavy; nights are quiet. Most hanoks here preserve original tiling and woodwork with minimal renovation.
"Wooden gate. Courtyard. Giwa tiles. City noise stops at the threshold."
Seochon
Seochon sits west of Gyeongbokgung. Lower density than Bukchon, stronger residential presence, deeper food scene. Hanok renovations here lean modern — engineered floors, larger bathrooms. Locals still live on these blocks.
"Morning sunlight through bamboo. Cypress tub in a garden. A bakery two doors down."
Ikseon-dong
Smallest of the three. Tight alley grid packed with cafes, bars, and design shops. Hanok conversions here are the most design-forward — younger crowd, nightlife within walking distance to Jongno and Euljiro.
"Narrow alleys. Low eaves. A 90-year-old building now serves espresso."
Best For
First-time Korea visitors. Couples. Cultural travelers. Anyone who saw a hanok video and wants to stay in one.

Stayfolio has the widest curated selection. Butler Lee manages 40+ hanoks and offers hands-on property matching. Airbnb covers most but not all listings.
Book 3–4 weeks ahead for April (cherry blossom) and October (fall foliage). Hanoks are small and fill fast.
Most Seoul hanoks sleep 2–4. For groups of 5+, target Muwolgwan (10-guest) or The Chae: Courtyard (10-guest).
Ondol (heated floors) is standard. Traditional hanoks use floor bedding; renovated hanoks often have beds. Confirm before booking.
Rakkojae is the top tier: tea ceremony, hanbok, cultural programming included.
